The first Sustainable Materials conference at SCI-Arc, Ecology for Our Future, was co-sponsored by Architects/Designers/Planners for Social Responsibility (ADPSR), Los Angeles. Garth Sheriff (president of the ADPSR) opens the conference.

Polly Osborne (architect, and conference chair) introduces the speakers, who include John Picard (sustainable builder), William Smart (Scientific Certification Systems), Jim Bell (ecological designer), Douglas Gardner (Maguire Thomas Partners), Scott MacGillivray (environmental designer), and Robert Cornell (landscape conservationist).

In closing comments John Picard says that when it comes to building materials, “mimicking nature is a lot cheaper than fighting it.”
