Ferda Kolatan discusses his book, Misfits & Hybrids : Architectural Artifacts for the 21st-century City (Routledge, 2024) as an exploration of “urban misfits … the unlikely adjacencies, intersections, and overlaps of objects that are vastly different in function, age, origin, and scale. …” which can be transformed “via techniques of extraction, combination and fusion” into “hybrid artifacts … an object with architectural qualities”.
Kolatan discusses dozens of urban misfits he and his students discovered in Istanbul, Cairo and New York City, that are documented in the book.
