After Hernán Díaz Alonso’s introduction, Catherine Opie discusses photographic projects from the late1980s to the present that engage with various kinds of landscape. She characterizes her work as using photography to bear witness, rather than document. The projects she discusses include:
• Master plan (1986-8)
• A long way from Paris (1989-90)
• Freeways (1994-5)
• Houses (1995-6)
• American cities: Mini-malls (1997-8), St. Louis (1999-2000), Skyways (2001), Wall Street (2001), Chicago (2004)
• Ice houses (2001)
• In and around home (2004-5)
• The Yosemite Falls installation for the 2016 U.S. Federal Courthouse in downtown Los Angeles
At 32:58, Opie plays a clip from her 2017 film “The Modernist”.
At 38:53 she plays clips from her stop-motion Political Collages (2019).
Opie concludes with Monument/Monumental (2020) and recent images of the construction of the Sixth Street Viaduct.
