In a talk to students embarking on their thesis projects, Sylvia Lavin discusses ways architects have engaged with art. She stresses thinking historically, and being aware of problem-solving activities of collecting, classifying, and organizing.
She challenges students to go look at art, pay attention to their responses, learn about the existing discourse related to the work - understanding its inevitable blind-spots.
As an exercise to help clarify their thinking, Lavin suggests students write a grant application to seek money in support their thesis work, and develop a course syllabus based on it.
