Join Margaret Griffin, FAIA, and John Enright, FAIA, LEED AP [Principals of Griffin Enright Architects] for a walkthrough of the Sunset Avenue Residence. This small house on an upslope lot in Santa Monica, CA maximizes views while creating a multitude of outdoor areas that form a sequence of spaces from the street to the guest house. Garden gathering spaces are connected to open interior living areas with large glass sliding doors while terraces culminate to an expansive roof deck. The upper guest house and main house roof deck are connected with a thirty-two foot bridge above the garden and through the main living area with an aluminum stair situated below an operable skylight. A xeriscaped garden with a variety of succulents is complemented with an elegant palate of materials including; basalt stone floors, exposed concrete, anodized aluminum, and dark and light cement plaster walls. The open living, dining, and kitchen area has views to the city below and a direct connection to the upper garden and terraces above. Construction services provided by Doug Raub Design and Development, and structural engineering design by Taylor & Syfan Consulting Engineers.
