Eugene Thacker (September 23, 2009)01:04:16

Jean Michel Crettaz introduces media theorist Eugene Thacker. Thacker begins by asking the question, “What is life?” Thacker formulates different questions addressing the thinking life, ontology, imminence, contradiction and living. He recites Dante’s description of the second circle of hell (the punishment of lust) from the Inferno. He shows depictions by artists of demons and angels from the Inferno and the Paradiso, comparing them to swarm structures. Thacker stresses the Aristotelean framework of these structures. Thacker concludes by characterizing the genre of supernatural horror as the “entelechy” of the weird, using Aristotle’s term for that which realizes or makes actual what is otherwise merely potential.
